Violence Erupts in Mhow After India’s Champions Trophy Victory

Following India’s victory in the Champions Trophy final in Dubai, violence erupted in Mhow, Indore district of Madhya Pradesh. The celebratory procession turned chaotic late on Sunday night when incidents of stone pelting and arson occurred. Police intervened promptly, bringing the situation under control, and have since intensified their crackdown on those responsible for spreading unrest. So far, 13 individuals have been arrested, with some facing charges under the National Security Act (NSA). Authorities have since increased security in the entire region to prevent further disturbances.

Security Tightened After the Incident

By Monday morning, peace had been restored in Mhow following the previous night’s unrest. Both district administration and police authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Some members of Hindu organizations were seen requesting shopkeepers to close their stores as a safety measure. Consequently, most of the shops in Mhow remained closed on Monday. However, a few shops that had remained open were eventually shut down by Hindu activists. A heavy police presence has been deployed in the affected area to ensure order.

Authorities are actively investigating the incident using CCTV footage to identify those involved in the violence.

DM’s Statement on the Situation

District Magistrate Ashish Singh addressed the media and provided details on the current situation. He stated:

“As soon as we received information about the incident, the police reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Our priority was to restore peace, and we succeeded in doing so. The police acted immediately to stop the stone pelting and arson incidents. After stabilizing the situation, we launched an investigation to identify those responsible. So far, 13 individuals have been arrested, and NSA charges will be filed against some of them. Additional FIRs may be registered as the investigation progresses. Currently, peace has been completely restored, and strict action will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future. No one responsible for the violence will be spared.”

How the Incident Unfolded

The unrest occurred during celebrations that took place across the country after India’s Champions Trophy victory. In Mhow, jubilant crowds had taken to the streets, chanting slogans and celebrating. However, tensions escalated near the Jama Masjid when a group suddenly began pelting stones. This triggered a confrontation between two groups, leading to vehicle arson and heightened chaos.

Upon receiving the report, the police quickly arrived at the scene. To disperse the crowd, officials fired tear gas shells and conducted a lathi charge to control the miscreants. The situation was fully stabilized later in the night. Several people injured in the incident were rushed to MY Hospital in Indore for treatment.
